SEE How to Calculate Points as JAMB Adopts “Point System” Option for 2016 Admissions

by Master Admin  |  in news at  13:49
JAMB-UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process.
The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators  in the country.

According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system.
While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission.
According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates.
“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said.
The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate.
The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”
The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point;  A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’  grades, the better his or her  chances of securing admission this year.
“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained.
Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.
For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.
JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon.
JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test.
JAMB also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.
JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks.
“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.”

by Master Admin  |  in news at  13:41
An unnamed woman in her 40s was so fed up with her marriage that she held up a plane, its entire passengers and crew for seven hours because she wanted an immediate divorce and wanted to get off the airplane immediately.
According to reports, shortly after she boarded the flight along with several hundred passengers flying from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, she told the crew she needed to get off in order to get a divorce.
The Rossiya Airline flight was almost ready for take off when the incident took place.xxxAccording to witnesses, the woman was heard saying: "I am not in the mood to fly now."xxxShe then went on to demand that flight attendants let her off the plane.

In accordance with safety regulations, more than 500 other passengers were also forced to disembark the aircraft.

The report didn't indicate whether the woman's husband was also aboard the plane at the time she made her decision.
A certain Elena Ashtein who uploaded a video of the incident to Instagram wrote: "One girl decided not to fly to the coastal town. Moreover, she changed her mind at the time of takeoff.
"For more than an hour [they] tried to persuade her to stay.  "But she said that she decided to get a divorce, and she had to get out."

U-17 W’Cup: Okpara urges Golden Eaglets to raise game

by Admin  |  in news at  06:39

Ex- Super Eagles goalkeeper, Willy Okpara, on Friday urged the National U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, to improve on their game during the FIFA U-17 World Cup, holding in Chile.

The competition holds from October 17 to November 8 in Chile.

Okpara told the News Agency of Nigeria in Soweto, South Africa, that as the defending champions, every team’s ambition would be to defeat them.

He said with adequate preparation, the Eaglets had the potential to perform well in the tournament.

“Being the defending champions, the Eaglets’ pride is at stake. They have to prove to the world that they are good and deserve to win the trophy.

“I urge the team to put in more than 100 per cent effort in all their games and I believe they will do well. They should keep to their coaches’ instructions and avoid underrating their opponents. Every game should be taken with all the seriousness it deserves,’’ he said.

Okpara, who is also the Team Manager of Orlando Pirates of Soweto, urged the Eaglets to strive to retain the trophy as it would improve on the country’s rating in international football.

“The players should realise that previous U-17 teams did the nation proud by winning the trophy. Such accomplishments can be repeated through determination and hard work.

“I am optimistic of a good outing for the team, given their level of preparation. The handlers of the team are equal to the task and have done a good job,” he said

Military action alone can’t win terror war, says Buhari

by Admin  |  in news at  08:31

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said military action alone could never be enough to end the menace of terrorism and extremism currently eating deep into global polity.

He said adherence to good governance, transparency, accountability and rule of law, were some of the best ways to start the process of ridding the world of terrorism.

Buhari made his position known in a statement he delivered at a Global Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism organised by President Barack Obama on the sideline of the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He said while military action was not enough, it was however capable of stemming the tide and reversing the process of recruitment, movement and effective operation of foreign terrorists’ fighters and their associated radical elements.

He said while Nigeria noted the efforts being made by the UN and the international community to tackle ISIL, a lot more needed to be done.

Buhari said, “Nigeria notes with satisfaction the efforts of the United Nations and the rest of the international community to contain ISIL. We certainly need to do more.

“We need to take military action combined with effective border security, intelligence collection and sharing, and vigorous policing action.

“These alone may not suffice, but they can certainly stem the tide and reverse the process of recruitment, movement and effective operation of foreign terrorist fighters and their associated radical extremists.

“In order to put in place the critical components of an effective approach to countering ISIL and eventually defeating it, we must address the threat from the source.

“We must find a way to prevent young people from turning to terror in the first place. And the young people that turn to violent extremism do not exist in a vacuum – they are often part of communities and families and are lured into the fold of barbaric and nihilistic organisations, somehow, through a misguided appeal to their worst fears, expectations and apparent frustrations.

“While addressing the causes of this attraction and how to deal with them, we should pay close attention to other manifest factors that may not be tangible but can be crucial.

“Good governance, which entails transparency, accountability and the rule of law, remains the basis on which we should kick-start the process of ridding the world of the menace of terrorism and violent extremism.

“The international community will be required to work together to deter and disrupt illicit financial flows from nations with weak anti-theft structures to other parts of the world.”

The President said where such funds were identified, the victim state should be assisted to recover them expeditiously.

He said member states needed to address local socio-economic grievances by formulating policies that would ensure broad-based transformation through job creation, equalisation of opportunities and expanding access to social services.

He added that African leaders also needed to rededicate themselves to uphold the mandate of the African Union’s Peer Review Mechanism and other good governance initiatives that they had adopted in the region, to encourage conformity with political, economic and corporate governance values

Obama, Castro meet as Cuba pushes to end embargo

by Admin  |  in news at  15:37

President Barack Obama met his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro on Tuesday at the United Nations — all smiles after both renewed their calls for an end to the US trade embargo against Havana.

The leaders of the former Cold War rivals shook hands at the start of what was their second meeting, after an historic encounter in April at the Summit of the Americas in Panama.

Close neighbors but long-time foes, the United States and Cuba restored diplomatic ties in July after a five-decade stand-off, and now must turn their attention to economic relations.

The two countries have reopened their embassies in each other’s capitals and are engaged in a dialogue to resolve their remaining political differences, but US trade sanctions remain.

Obama’s White House wants to lift the embargo, which prevents almost all trade across the Florida Straits, but conservatives in the US Congress are not ready to forgive the communist island.

After the meeting, the White House said the leaders had discussed the visit last week of Pope Francis, who helped mediate closer US-Cuba ties, to both countries.

And Obama highlighted that, even if the embargo remains, recent US regulatory changes that did not need Congressional approval would allow more Americans to travel and do business in Cuba.

The White House said these reforms would help Cuba more if they were accompanied by measures from Havana to open its economy.

“The president also highlighted steps the United States intends to take to improve ties between the American and Cuban peoples, and reiterated our support for human rights in Cuba,” it said.

On Monday, during a speech to the UN General Assembly, Obama said he was confident Congress would “inevitably lift an embargo that should not be in place anymore.”

“For 50 years, the United States pursued a Cuba policy that failed to improve the lives of the Cuban people,” he admitted, to applause, in his address to fellow world leaders.

“We changed that. We continue to have differences with the Cuban government. We will continue to stand up for human rights.

“But we address these issues through diplomatic relations, and increased commerce, and people-to-people ties.”

Castro, the 84-year-old veteran revolutionary who succeeded his brother Fidel in 2006, made his first address to the Assembly on Monday, a few hours after Obama took the podium.

“Now, a long and complex process begins towards the normalization of relations, but this will only be achieved with the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade,” he said

Taliban overrun Afghan city of Kunduz

Hundreds of militants stormed the city before dawn, quickly seizing key buildings and advancing on the airport. The Taliban have overrun the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, taking control of most areas and freeing hundreds of prisoners from its jail.
The government says it has sent reinforcements to Kunduz and fighting is ongoing.
Kunduz would be the first provincial capital taken by the Taliban since they lost power in 2001's US-led invasion.
The attack came a day before the first anniversary of President Ashraf Ghani's unity government.
Kunduz is strategically important as it acts as a transport hub for the north of the country.
Map
It also has symbolic significance for the Taliban as it was their former northern stronghold before their government was overthrown.
"With the capturing of the police compound and governor's office in Kunduz, the whole province fell to our hands and our fighters are now advancing towards the airport," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on his Twitter account.

A picture on the same account purportedly showed fighters at a roundabout in the city centre raising the Taliban's white flag.
Later, interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi confirmed that "most of Kunduz city" was controlled by the Taliban, and said Afghan forces were regrouping at the airport.
A Taliban statement called the operation in Kunduz "an immense conquest" and urged their fighters to protect the local population.
The statement said the government in Kabul "should openly admit its defeat".
Earlier, the government admitted that it had lost control of parts of the city. It said at least 25 militants and two Afghan policemen had been killed and that reinforcements had been dispatched.

Analysis: Dawood Azami, BBC World Service

This attack is one of the most serious security breaches since the start of the Taliban insurgency 14 years ago. But the Taliban's main challenge will now be to hold the city.
Kunduz has a huge strategic significance as it is considered a gateway to Afghanistan's northern provinces and shares a border with Tajikistan, Afghanistan's Central Asian neighbour.
The Taliban already control huge chunks of the province's rural areas, where the majority of the population live. The insurgents have intensified their fighting in the province over the past two years.
They are the dominant militant group in the province, with an estimated 2,000 fighters. But there are also reportedly hundreds of foreign fighters associated with al-Qaeda, so-called Islamic State and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).
The Afghan security forces are stretched thin as they deal with multiple attacks all over the country.
Bad governance in Kunduz is also a key problem. Incompetence and intimidation by some local officials have alienated many in the province.

Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Husaini told the BBC's Mahfouz Zubaide that militants had captured the jail in Kunduz and freed about 500 prisoners, including members of the Taliban.
One of the freed prisoners told the BBC: "It was about 4pm when the Taliban entered the jail and started fighting with police. After a few minutes the police escaped and the Taliban fighters opened all the cells and all the prisoners rushed out."
He said he saw Taliban armed with small and heavy weapons in the streets outside.
Media captionThe Afghan government says several militants and two policemen have been killed
Many government officials are said to be trying to flee via the city's heavily fortified airport.
Kunduz province has seen a number of attacks since April, with the Taliban joining forces with other insurgents.
Militant violence has increased across Afghanistan since the departure of most US and Nato forces last year.

WATER FOUND IN MARS-NASA

by Admin  |  in news at  15:03
NASA announced on Monday that liquid saltwater exists on the surface of Mars – a discovery that scientists say indicates the “potential” for life on the planet.
The historic findings by scientists from NASA and several US universities are based on research on dark, narrow and elongated streaks that appear on the surface of the Red Planet and which are known as “recurring slope lineae” (RSL).
Research shows the streaks “appear and grow incrementally in the downslope direction during warm seasons”.
NASA scientists suggest the streaks were formed as a result of salty “flows” or “seeps” because they bear a striking resemblance to the shapes and curves that water on Earth makes as it flows along the surface of the ground.
The theory that water exists on Mars was first proposed by scientist Lujendra Ojha, who as an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona in 2011, studied dark, finger-shaped images on Mars.
Ojah, now a PhD candidate at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the lead author of the study, told Al Jazeera that “water does exist on Mars.”
Ojah added that chemical signatures of water were found in the crystals of salt samples.
“We found evidence of water activity in hydrated salts on Mars,” he said.

ondo workers get salaries on tuesday-govt

by Admin  |  in news at  14:56
Civil servants in Ondo State  will be paid their two-month salary arrears on Tuesday.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, in a statement after the state’s Executive Council Meeting on Monday, said the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, had  directed  that the two-month outstanding salaries be paid on Tuesday as agreed by the state executive council.
He said the meeting deliberated widely on the recent workers verification exercise.
The commissioner added that Mimiko expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the exercise, especially the savings government was able to make through the blocking of loopholes exploited by some unscrupulous individuals to channel funds to ghost workers.
“The governor also mentioned that officials identified to be involved in  manipulations discovered in the payment vouchers of workers in the state  will also face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
