The Internet has come to this: Push-button pizza ordering

by Unknown  |  in technology at  11:13
Transportation company Cabify will use Telefónica smart buttons to let people order a car.
Transportation company Cabify will use Telefónica smart buttons to let people order a car. Telefónica
We started with Internet-enabled PCs, moved to Internet-enabled phones and now are strapping on Internet-enabled watches. What comes next? Perhaps something as simple as an Internet-enabled button.
Telefónica, a Spanish carrier with network operations in many countries around the world, on Wednesday unveiled what it calls a smart button along with a couple partners who'll bring it to real-world tasks. Cabify will let people order car transportation by pushing the button; a tiny printer inside will print a receipt with information about the driver that's been dispatched. Shipping company Seur will let customers push the button to generate a request for a package to be collected. An earlier test with Telepizza let people use the smart buttons to order pizzas.
It's similar to Amazon's Dash Buttons, which enable one-click ordering of household products. But Telefónica's buttons use cellular networks, not home Wi-Fi, and thus can be placed anywhere in a city or town. And by tapping standard smartphone networks, they can be used across the world, not just on Telefónica's networks.
The smart buttons represent the latest twist in a burgeoning category of products called the Internet of Things, which spreads networked computing to everything from traffic lights to door locks. It's a market in which many companies are keen to get a foothold, since global spending on devices and services related to the Internet of Things is expected to grow from $656 billion in 2014 to $1.7 trillion in 2020, according to research firm IDC.
Pushing a smart button to get a pizza may seem uncomfortably close to behavioral experiments in which pigeons peck a key to get a reward, but lacing computer-powered, network-linked automation through our world could offer convenience and utility, not just instant gratification.
Telefónica plans to offer an unbranded version of the smart button for other companies that want to customize it, the company said. A smart button could be handy for letting people hail a taxi, vote on which mural they like best in a public art installation or alert a laundromat that a washer needs maintenance. The devices can rely on battery power or be plugged in.

Smart buttons vs. smartphones

But the idea faces a big challenge in the real world: smartphones already bring the Internet to people outside their homes. A taxi app can flag down a cab from wherever you are, not just wherever a button happens to be, and smartphones offer a lot more sophistication, like a way to pay for that car ride, too. Companies considering the idea also might prefer people to use their own phones to avoid pranksters and vandals who might abuse the button system.
Telefonica wasn't available to comment on the potential abuses the buttons may face in public.
Many Internet of Things companies sell gadgets, but Telefónica sees the technology as a new way to sell network access, too. Still, it's hedging its bets: Telefónica also invested in a French startup called Sigfox that offers its own network specifically for the Internet of Things. The Sigfox network offers long-range communications, low power consumption and low cost, but only carries tiny amounts of data compared to mobile phone networks. Sigfox could serve as an alternative network connecting nontraditional devices like washing machines and dog collars.
But for now Telefonica's smart buttons use the regular phone network. Each smart button has a cellular-based SIM (subscriber identity module) card inside to identify the device on the network. SIM cards, which are tiny computer chips embedded in a sliver of plastic, carry an ID number and a digital key to authenticate a device on a network, and are found in every smartphone.
One major SIM card maker, Gemalto, is promoting a more rugged alternative it calls MIM, or machine identification modules, for industrial uses on the Internet of Things. One example it announced this week: an oceanography consulting firm called HidroMares will build them into sensors that detect wave motions, currents, and the salinity, depth and temperature of water at ports. The sensors are fixed to buoys and piers help port operators make navigation safer and faster.
Marine shipping may not be as fun as holding a spontaneous pizza picnic in the park. But at a deeper level, it comes down to the same thing: wiring the Internet into everything we do.

HOT -eBay gives investors a date for PayPal's independent market debut

by Unknown  |  in technology at  11:11
The split gets an official July 17 date. eBay
PayPal's split from eBay will come to a close, and its new life as a separate company will happen, on July 20.
So who will invest in PayPal? All of eBay's shareholders. The company said investors will receive one share of PayPal (tentatively under the symbol "PYPL") for every share of eBay ("EBAY") they own, according to a statement Friday.
The move marks the end of what has been seen as an awkward partnership since eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002. The deal was initially pitched as a way for eBay to boost PayPal transactions by driving auction participants toward the online payment service. But eBay itself apparently couldn't realize any significant merger benefits beyond pushing traffic.
Since then, PayPal has become a bright spot of eBay's business and is expected to flourish on its own when it hits the market. When eBay announced the split last September, its shares jumped on the news, rising by more than 7 percent in hours, its most dramatic spike in years.
Becoming independent will allow PayPal to exclusively focus on payments, a strategy that had been discussed by eBay's board but deemed unwise until the surprise split announcement last fall. "The commerce and payments landscape is rapidly changing," the statement said, "and each business faces different competitive opportunities and challenges."
In 2014, about 162 million people used PayPal, according to today's announcement, and total payment volume for the year increased by 26 percent to $235 billion.
The move is also a victory for activist investor Carl Icahn, who began agitating for a separation in January after eBay offered disappointing earnings. In March, he offered an alternative plan to sell off 20 percent of PayPal via an initial public offering. In a statement posted on his blog, Icahn said he was pleased with the split.
"It is almost a 'no brainer' that these companies should be separated to increase the value of these great assets and thus to meaningfully enhance value for all shareholders," Icahn said.
After the tax-free spinoff next month, eBay CEO John Donahoe will step down as the company's top operating executive and join one or both of the boards of the two new companies. He has been at eBay for a decade, serving as CEO since 2008.

Exploring the Windows 10 Settings menu {microsoft}

Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET
Open up the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview (Build 10130), and you'll probably notice something new on the new hybrid Start menu/screen: Three permanent links - Settings, Documentsand Power.
Wait a minute -- Settings?
Click Settings, and the new Windows 10 Settings menu will open in a new window. It's clean, with big, touch-friendly icons and simple descriptions, and it looks similar to the PC settings menu in Windows 8. But while the PC settings menu was hidden in the Charms bar (Charms > Settings > Change PC settings), this new Settings menu is right there on the Start menu.

I'd say that the new Settings menu is where you'll go to change your PC's settings, but that's not entirely true. The Control Panel, which is hidden away as usual, is still a hub for most of your PC's settings -- even settings that appear on the Settings menu. Earlier this year, it looked like Microsoft was perhaps trying to get rid of the Control Panel altogether (they did remove Windows Update from the Control Panel in an earlier build, and put it in the new Settings menu -- and it's still there). But Build 10130 is going to be one of the last builds before Windows 10 comes out on July 29, and the Control Panel still houses a lot of important settings.
The new Settings menu is useful: it brings most of your PC's basic settings out of the Control Panel, so users who aren't comfortable digging around in the Device Manager can see their connected hardware and adjust their Internet settings. The Settings menu also adds a few settings that never existed in the Control Panel to begin with -- namely, privacy options geared toward tablet and phone users.

Here's a deeper look at each of the sections in the new Settings menu:

PAUL POGBA IN FOR BARCA?

by Samuel  |  in entertainment at  08:53
pBarcelona recently completed their second treble in six years after winning the Champions League Final and now the club is competing in a race against Real Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea to signing Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
But according to Barcelona presidential candidate Agusti Benedito, the 22-year-old already spoke to him regarding a possible move at Camp Nuo, ESPN reported.
Barca already added former Sevilla midfielder Aleix Vidal this summer but he would not be allowed to play for the Catalans until January 2016 because of a transfer ban FIFA handed to the club.
Despite the ban, ESPN reported that there is a speculation Barcelona already placed an €80 million offer for the French sensation.
Benedito said in an interview with Catalan station 8TV that he has been in touch with Pogba and Juventus president Andrea Agnelli.
"I made contact with Pogba. First I spoke with Andrea Agnelli and then personally with the player. We were asked for €12 million net per season, and a transfer fee of €80 million," Benedito explained.
But if Barcelona cannot get Pogba to sign with them, they are also targeting PSG midfielder Marco Verratti according to the Daily Mirror.
Barca will likely shift their attention to the 22-year-old if Pogba will be unavailable for them according to the Spanish Press.
Verratti had an impressive showing for PSG playing 32 out of 38 Ligue 1 games and helped the club reach the Champions League quarterfinals in his seven appearances.
Setting aside the club's targets, the Daily Mirror also reported that defenders Martin Montoya, Douglas, Adriano, goalkeeper Jordi Masip and midfielder Gerard Deulofeu might leave the club before the start of next season.
The Mirror reported that Montoya draws interest from Juventus and Inter Milan while Adriano is also being linked to a transfer to Serie A.
Meanwhile, Deulofeu is being linked to a return to Everton after playing for the club on loan in the 2013-14 season.

Alcatel Idol 3 (5.5) and Idol 3 (4.7) review: Two phones, one soul

by Samuel  |  in technology at  08:44
The Alcatel Idol 3 name is shared between two smartphones that couldn't be any different. Announced during MWC 2015, one is a 5.5-inch behemoth, while the other is a more than pocketable 4.7-inch device. And as luck would have it, we got to review both concurrently, but in different spots in the world.
Alcatel Idol 3
Both devices should be available worldwide, but Alcatel will be using the Alcatel Idol 3 to start a proper offensive on the US market. The Alcatel Idol 3 (5.5) is the company's boldest entry there to date, aiming to bring style, a rich feature set and value in the upper mid-range segment. It comes with 1080p screen resolution and a Snapdragon 615 chipset. So we got to review this one on US soil.
The other one, the The Alcatel Idol (4.7) is the more affordable of the two and it's no surprise it comes with lesser hardware. It's got the same camera as its bigger sibling, but it has a 720p only resolution screen and a Snapdragon 410 chipset. It's the mini in the duo and it's aiming at the lower midrange spectrum of the market. We got to review one in our European HQ.
A quick glance at the long list of features of both phones shows Alcatel means business with its latest products. With IPS screens, dual speakers, 13MP Sony IMX214 main cameras, and lightly customized Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and sleek exteriors they certainly leave the right impression. Both come with the industry first fully reversible design meaning you can talk on either of them holding it with either way up. Not only the UI, but also the active speaker and mic combo will happily rotate to accommodate your preference even mid-call.
