police inspector sentenced to death

by Admin  |  in news at  14:55

The Punch reports that the ruling of Rivers State High Court is coming about five years after Nwasouba’s murder that happened on November 10, 2010 in Port Harcourt.
Nwasouba was branded an armed robber by the police while he was on his way to distribute his products to customers within the Port Harcourt metropolis.
Although the dealer was shouting that he was only a pure water producer and not an armed robber, a team of police officer led by Timothy shot him dead.
Delivering his judgment on Monday, September 28, Justice Adolphus Enebeli stated that the convict demonstrated an act of inhumanity through his action.
The trial judge said that based on the testimonies of witnesses, the convict was an “Inhuman, trigger-happy policeman, who engages in murder; a hater of humankind and a merciless killer.”
Stressing that the killing of the dealer by the convict was deliberate, Justice Enebeli ordered that Timothy should die by hanging.
“According to Section 319 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I do not have the power to reduce your sentence. That, you, Inspector Timothy Sampson be hanged on your neck until you are dead,” he said.
Meanwhile, one Corporal Moses, who had been standing trial together with the convict, has been discharged and acquitted. The trial judge stated that the policeman never conspired to kill the victim.Just recently, a drunk police officer was caught on camera exchanging blows with a young lady in Lekki area of Lagos.
Two month ago, three police officers brutalised an eight month pregnant woman in Lagos. The victim had complication as a result of the assault and lost her newborn baby.

Mascherano accused of €1.5m tax evasion

by Admin  |  in news at  14:50

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano is being investigated of avoiding €1.5 million in tax charges, Catalunya legal authorities have announced.

The Argentine is alleged to have omitted income earned from image rights in his tax declarations in 2011 and 2012 by using third parties located in an offshore tax haven.

Earlier in September, Mascherano opted to pay back €1.5m to the Spanish Treasury, plus €200,000 in interest, according to the EFE news agency, once the investigation became public knowledge.

That gesture is expected to aid the player to obtain a lesser sentence should he be found guilty on the charges against him.

“With the goal of dodging that tax burden, the player failed to declare income from Nike paid via a company located in the United States and another in the Portuguese island Madeira,” the Economic Crimes Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement released on Monday.

“The island’s duty-free area holds a particularly favourable tax regime,” it added, stating that via these channels Mascherano evaded €587,822 in income tax in 2011 and another €968,907 the following year.

Neither Mascherano nor Barcelona have commented on the accusations to date

by Samuel  |  in news at  14:49
28 year old Michael Adegbite, a model, fitness instructor and teaching assistant who campaigned against knife crime was stabbed to death after robbers pretended to be interested in buying the second hand MacBook laptop he advertised on a classified website- Gumtree for 200 pounds.

It was learnt that he went with a friend to meet someone they believed was a buyer in Enfield on Sunday evening but were confronted by 3 youngsters.

Police believe the men lured the 28-year-old to the rendezvous with the intention of mugging him for the laptop. Mr Adegbite and his friend managed to snatch the laptop back after they tried to rob them and the suspects ran off.
However, Police say shortly after the incident, another joined the victim and his friend and the 3 men set out to look for the group who had attempted to rob them. Minutes later, they found the group, a confrontation and a scuffle ensued on the street and Mr Adegbite got stabbed once in the chest.

He died by the roadside 30 minutes after he was stabbed despite frantic attempts by paramedics to save his life

Gadget Ogling: An Amped-Up Smartphone, a Giant USB Charger and a Gun Detector

by Samuel  |  in technology at  14:27

marshall-london-android-smartphone

Greetings, and welcome to Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, where we award trophies for the best and worst of this week's gadget hunt.
In our crosshairs this week are a smartphone from an audio equipment maker, an enormous USB power brick, a smartphone case for moviemakers, and a gun detection system.
As ever, these are not reviews, and the ratings relate only to how much I'd like to try out the items with my own hands.

Sonic Smartphone

Marshall, best known for its guitar amplifiers and headphones, is moving into the smartphone market.
Its first device, London, has dual front-facing speakers and a pair of audio outputs, making it easy to share what you're listening to with a friend who's also wearing headphones, assuming you're in a setting where you don't have the option of playing the audio over speakers.
There's a dedicated button for access to various music services, and there's a scroll wheel with that unmistakable Marshall gold sheen to control the volume. Apple's iPhones have earpods, but Marshall's London comes bundled with a pair of Mode earphones (see above).
It looks beautiful, but outside of the special Marshall features, its specs align closely with many Android smartphones. It has a microSD card slot, thankfully, which seems to be rarer and rarer among new Android smartphones.
I've been an iPhone owner for seven years now. If there's one compliment I'll pay the London, it's that at first glance, it's one of the few Android smartphones in all that time that's made me consider leaping the great divide. Rock on.

USB Tower Block

A new so-called "super charger" has up to 60 USB ports for powering everything in your home that doesn't run off the power grid. That's a little over the top.
Allputer's 60-Port Super USB Charge Station could be useful in an office where socket space is at a premium. I know all too well the feeling of struggling through a workday with nary a socket to be seen, and security restrictions on the use of USB ports while my battery meter dwindles.
port giant super usb charger
I confess I am perplexed as to why anyone might ever buy this for their home, though. Unless you're gadget-crazy and use dozens of portable gizmos every day, there's no reason you should need to charge 60 different machines at once.
Knowing me, I'd fill all the ports with novelty USB storage drives. To see a wall of ridiculous tchotchkes and always know where I can find a USB drive when needed is a life goal I never knew I had until now.

Smart Moviemaking

I'm surprised that there haven't been more than a scant few movies entirely shot on a smartphone as yet. The cameras on modern devices are good enough to record some outstanding footage.
Perhaps that'll change if the Lumenati CS1 takes off. It's an iPhone case that, when paired with an app, allows you to look through a viewfinder and record what you see by holding down a physical trigger.
It's designed to evoke memories of the simplicity of a Super 8, but since we're 50 years on from the debut of Kodak's famed camera, there are far more bells and whistles here. You can swap out lenses, and the CS 1 gives the option to add filters, handles, microphones and lights.
The case also can attach to a tripod, so it is aimed at people who want to get the most out of their iPhone for recording video.
I wanted to dislike the CS 1 at immediate glance, but as I learned more, it won me over. My favorite touch is loading one's iPhone into the case as one would a film cartridge into their Super 8 camera.
It's a charming idea, and if it helps unearth future Spielbergs, Scorceses and Kubricks, then all credit to its creators.

GunDetect is a camera system that uses computer vision to detect firearms and send you an alert. The creators suggest that it could be used to stop your own gun from being used without authorization, or to know when someone else is at your home with a firearm.
There are two versions of GunDetect available through its crowdfunding campaign. The less-expensive model is a cloud-based version that requires a subscription to process images. If it works as promised, it will encrypt the images it sees, send them to the cloud for processing, and send you an alert if it sees a firearm. The self-contained version takes care of the image processing with an on-board system.
The makers say GunDetect has a 90 percent accuracy record, but when you're trusting it with your safety to a certain degree, one would hope the degree of accuracy would be higher. If a home invader packed a gun in a backpack or was adept at concealing it, it seems unlikely GunDetect would spot the weapon. Also, there's no night vision capability, so good luck tracking the presence of firearms at night.
It could add to a broader home security setup. Though it's a good idea, I can't see how it would prove effective enough as a standalone security system.

CAN Finally Reacts To Alleged 7 Billion Bribe

by Samuel  |  in news at  14:24
In what might appear to be a belated reaction to the allegation by a Borno-based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, who on Thursday revealed that the money given to pastors by President Goodluck Jonathan was actually N7 billion and not N6 billion as initially alleged by the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has respond.
Public Relation Officer, PRO, of the Northern chapter of CAN, Mr. Sunday Oibe
Public Relation Officer, PRO, of the Northern chapter of CAN, Mr. Sunday Oibe
The Public Relation Officer, PRO, of the Northern chapter of CAN, Mr. Sunday Oibe, on Friday described the allegation as ridiculous, and wondered why mischief makers would cook up such lies to deceive the general public.
He said the allegation is a complete lie and just one of the many evil plots to dent the image of CAN’s leadership as well as to rubbish its integrity and make it morally incapable of leading Christians in these trying times.

According to him, there was no way anyone would collect a kobo on behalf of CAN and start sharing it like booty, pointing out that the clergyman, Musa-Dikwa is totally unknown in CAN cycle.
“I am just hearing his name and that of his organization for the first time. How come he could be privy to such an arrangement if it really existed? It is a shame that anyone would make such mean allegation, without giving a shred of evidence, just to fulfill a political agenda at the cost of our ecumenism. It is all to silence the voice of CAN leaders against the tyranny and oppression that Christians suffer in the north-east and other parts of northern Nigeria. For the first time our oppressors have found CAN speaking up for its members, and they must do everything to frustrate our leaders. The kingdom of evil shall, again, fall flat at the feet of Jesus,” Oibe said.

Meanwhile, Bishop Emmah Isong, Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Cross River State also accused Director General (DG) of the APC presidential campaign council, Governor Amaechi of  bribing 500 pastors to support pres. buhari after the Rivers governor had alleged that President Jonathan paid some pastors  N6 billion to campaign against Buhari.
However, a document was allegedly obtained by Online News platform showing a list of Kaduna Islamic clerics who were allegedly rewarded for being supportive towards the President Jonathan campaign to be re-elected into office.

How Fake Pastors Defraud, Kill Prayer Seekers

by Samuel  |  in news at  14:18
Investigations show that  growing trend of seeking spiritual breakthrough from pastors and Islamic clerics had turned Nigerians and other Africans into victims of the very situation they are seeking prayers to conquer.
Seeking spiritual help has also sent many to their early graves.
This was the case last year, when more than 50 persons on a spiritual pilgrimage died at the Synagogue Church of all Nations at the Ikotun area of Lagos state after an uncompleted guest house in the church premises collapsed killing the occupants who are mostly South Africans.
Naij.com’s  Investigations  also show  dubious persons  are taking advantage of this yearning  for spiritual breakthrough to deceive and defraud prayer seekers.
This was the case , when police men attached to  the Ogun State police command arrested a pastor who disguised as an armed robbers and attacked    a banker in his home at Agbara area of the state  and made away with the victim’s  N3.7million.

The banker was  however  shocked  when the police revealed  the suspected armed robber  who attacked him  was   pastor Ndubisbi  Ignatius , whom the banker and his family patronize for prayers.
Following his arrest, the pastor confessed he lied to the banker that he should send his family members and other tenants in his house away so that the banker can concentrate for a seven day series of prayer and fasting to avert an impending doom.
The banker unaware of the pastor’s intent obeyed the pastor’s “prophesy” which later turned out to be a fraud.
When the banker was in his house alone praying, the same pastor Ndubisi who told him to stay at home to pray, allegedly dressed up, wore a mask and went into the banker’s house with a cutlass and a gun and demanded for N15million.
Narrating how he concocted the plan to rob the banker, the pastor Ndubisi  said
I have a family friend who had been helping me in school but I was in need of money so I attacked him in his house at Agbara estate in  Ogun state. Yes I attacked him and it was a terrible thing I did . I am a student. I attended a seminary in Enugu state and I pray for people. I got to know the banker one Mr. Nwosu through a family friend and I have been praying for him and his family for about 2 years now. I reside I Enugu but I go from place to place praying for people. The banker had a challenge then and after I prayed for him, he got victory and since then I have been praying for him I have known him for two years.
Sometimes last month, I had problem in school.  I needed some money for my school but the devil came to my mind and I decided to deceive the banker so I can get some money to solve my school problem . I know I should have approached him for financial assistance but I don’t ask people for money after I pray for them. I lied to the banker that I saw a vision and he was in danger. I told him to send his family away so he can be alone to pray. I called him back again to ask everybody in his premises to leave that he needed to be alone for the prayer session. All this while I was close to his house in Agbara Estate watching all his movement   but I lied to him that I was in Enugu. When I saw that he was alone in the house, I asked him to put salt in water and sprinkle the rooms and everywhere in his premises. When I saw that he had gone upstairs to sprinkle the room , I sneaked into the premises and hide myself . All this while, I was talking with him on the phone and when he was not noticing, I sneaked into his bedroom. I was wearing a mask. I told him to lit different candles in his living room and he started praying. I stormed out from where I was hiding in the room and held him at gun point; I told him to bring N15million. I threatened him that he should not try to be smart that our master is watching whatever he was doing and he should cooperate. The man told me that he cannot get N15million but can get me N3million. He called a banker to bring N3million to his house. When the lady came with the cash, he went downstairs and collected the money from her and sent her away. I collected the money from him . I told him to bring another N1.5million   but he told me he cannot get the money from his bank again but he can get the money from  a friend . I forced him to enter the car and we drove down to Okokomaiko area in Lagos state .The friend came and gave him N700, 000. He gave me the money and I jumped out of the car with the N3.7million”.

The Ogun State police public relations officer , Muyiwa Adejobi   said  the suspect was arrested following a petition by the banker .
The CP added that the suspect made away with the banker’s phones but he was later arrested  and investigation revealed he was the brain behind the attack on the banker .
Our investigations revealed  that the suspect is the same man  the victim was engaging  to pray for him and his family . The victim went through harrowing experience in the hands of the so called pastor but he was later arrested and he confessed to the crime”.
In a press statement by the Rivers State police command, the command advised members of the public to report cases of unscrupulous pastors to the command .
This advice follows the arrest of three pastors for alleged fraud.
The statement read “These fraudsters, masquerading themselves as prophets, are on the loose and prey on the gullible members of the public through the use of false prophesy and divine pronouncements. The pastors were arrested following a petition by one Mr. Umejiego ,a Director of a private organisation who was lured into a false scheme through his wife by the pastor of the  Church named “Favour Anointing Ministry, located at  7A Ojoto Lane Mile 3,Diobu, Port Harcourt  allegedly operated by one Prophet Victory Ibe.
Ibe confessed to be a perpetual dupe and that he has always had in his possession a pro-forma change of ownership which he used to make people part with their properties.  Mr. Ibe tricked Mr. Umejiogo to part with his Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep to “sow as seed” into Mr. Ibe’s life.He (Ibe) thereafter produced a change of ownership which he promptly got signed by the unsuspecting victim who immediately handed over the original documents to him(Ibe) together with the vehicle the suspected fake pastors were arrested after Mr. Ibe was involved in an accident with the car” The statement read.

Three Pastors Arrested For Kidnapping

by Samuel  |  in news at  14:14
The Ogun state Special Anti Robbery Squad have arrested three pastors and a herbalist for allegedly kidnapping a United States-based Nigerian in the state, Vanguard reports.
Monilola Lateef, a 70-year-old woman, her son Modiu and two others were also arrested for alleged armed robbery in Abeokuta.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the state police public relations officer, stated that the three pastors and one herbalist belonged to a five-man gang of kidnappers who had been terrorising residents of the Ijebu area of the state.
He said the suspects were arrested at Ita-Marun, Ijebu Ode, by men of the state Anti-Robbery Squad.
Adejobi added that the  suspects, including Ganiyu Olaiya, Segun Makanjuola, Bisi Akinleye and Bayo Adekunle, were arrested for allegedly abducting a man who just returned to the country from abroad.
According to him, the three Christian clerics and herbalist deceived their victim with an offer of spiritual assistance for certain personal problems he was having.
He said: “The fifth member of the gang lost his life during an exchange of fire with the police at their hideout.Police recovered one locally-made pistol loaded with cartridges and one Cherokee jeep with number plates LND 25 CE from the suspects. The suspects kidnapped their victim after tricking him into their hideout. 70-year-old Lateef was arrested along with the gang members for allegedly assisting his 35-year-old son, Modiu Lateef, who sustained gunshot injuries during an operation, to get treatment from a herbalist.”

Show Of Shame: Pastors, Church Members Fight In Church

by Samuel  |  in news at  14:05

The Enugu state police command has locked up the Mount Street Parish of Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria after two pastors and their loyalists engaged in a free-for-all fight.
The two pastors and their supporters fought over who should take control of the parish.
Apparently there has been an ongoing crisis in the church for more than three years as two persons, Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi Okoroafor are each laying claims to the leadership of the church, a position known as General Superintendent, a matter that is currently before the Supreme Court, Vanguard reports.
The drama was said to have started on Sunday, July 19, when one of the pastors, Rev. Nathaniel Udeze, came with letters of posting and other court documents as part of preparations to be installed as the new pastor at the parish.

According to him, he had been officially posted there by the leadership of the church under Rev. Paul Emeka, adding that Rev. Amaechi Agbo had been transferred to another parish since May 2015.
He was however resisted by Rev, Agbo and his supporters, who accused him of being an intruder and vowed not to allow him take over.
The trouble degenerated when supporters of both pastors arrived and started sharing different versions of Sunday school manual in preparation for the main service.
Both pastors threw caution to the wind and reportedly started shoving each other and their supporters followed suit, engaging in fisticuffs.
The police had to be called to restore order. On arrival, the divisional police officer, Dennis Ayara tried to calm the warring parties but all his efforts to bring the situation under control proved futile.
The led to the eventual shutdown of the church premises as the police cordoned off the place and put it under lock, while the leaders of the two factions were asked to report to the station.

D'Banj And Don Jazzy To Reconcile?

by Samuel  |  in entertainment at  14:01
Don Jazzy and D’Banj are two big names familiar to every music lover in Nigeria, the two entertainers have carved niche for themselves not only in Nigeria but also the rest of the world.
It is safe to say the two stars are international artistes not just Nigerian. The duo made headlines with hits in the early 20s and they were adjudged the most popular duo in the industry.
The only big group that can be compared to D’Banj/ Don Jazzy combination in Nigeria then was P-Square (Still together). It was a smooth jolly ride for the then Mo’Hits group headlined by Jazzy and D’Banj before their infamous split in 2012.

Of course as talented individuals, they moved on after the split with Jazzy forming a dynasty called Mavin Records and D’Banj forming DB Records. With their individual successes, fans still missed their top notch combo.
Is their case friends turned foes?
Well the duo has been so mature after the split with either of them not throwing public jab at each other a plus that was for their career leaving out third party to meddle in the affair.
Three years after the silence, the fantastic duo have been making positive pass at each other.
D’Banj was the first to bring up Jazzy issue during the interview he granted to the “Truth” an interactive programme with Olisa Adebua.
Then came Don Jazzy who gave his onetime right hand man a shoutout during his 33rd birthday this year.
Birthday message normal right? D’Banj made the possibilities of the reunion obvious when he won the MAMA evolution awards beating Asa, 2Face, P-Square and others. The Kokomaster dedicated the award to his old pal right on the MAMAS stage.
Don Baba then reciprocated the kind gesture by posting this tweet: “Shout out to the baddest entertainer we know on the MAMA EVOLUTION AWARD. Thanks 4 the dedication bro @iamdbanj
Is it safe to say that without Don Jazzy there is No D’Banj and vice versa? Have they so missed each other? Do they want a comeback? Only time will tell in the meantime, congratulations to D’Banj the MAMA’s Evolution Award winner.
